Histories and Anniversaries 1902-1987

This series comprises records related to the history of the Immanuel Deaconess Motherhouse and Training School and the anniversaries observed by the motherhouse and the larger institution, the Immanuel Deaconess Institute (IDI). Records date from 1902-1987 with several undated records. This series includes subject matter related to two aspects of chronicling the formation and evolution of the diaconate of the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church. The first set of records comprises written histories of the IDI and diaconate. These written histories are typewritten and handwritten and were used at various occasions, such as particular campaigns, district meetings, and Founder's Day celebrations. Subjects addressed in these histories include the founding of the institute, which included the creation of the diaconate, motherhouse, and training school. Record types include narrative histories, timelines, outlines, articles used in news sources and informational booklets, excerpts from published books, and in one instance, a student paper written for partial course fulfillment. The second set of records is that which pertains to anniversaries and observances marked and celebrated by the IDI. There are eight such anniversaries or observances: 25th, 35th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 75th, 95th, and 100th. In this series, it should be noted that two kinds of anniversaries were celebrated: anniversaries or observances for the 50th, 70th, 75th, 95th, and 100th, commemorate the date the training of sisters began in 1887. Anniversaries or observances for the 25th, 35th, and 60th commemorate the date of completion of the first motherhouse, in 1890-1891. Record types include programs, anniversary issues of the IDI publication, The Deaconess Banner, newspaper articles, printed histories, brochures, pamphlets, invitations, and a 75th anniversary history written by Sister Henrietta Anderson.
